The Shamrock Area has become one of the top hunting destinations in the Texas Panhandle. Area locations where hunters may purchase a hunting license in Shamrock is Buy For Less Express, in Wellington and Wheeler is Market Square Thriftway. Shamrock’s hunting attraction has grown tremendously due to an explosion of deer and turkey populations.

Hunters may arrive by commercial airline (Shamrock is only 90 miles east of Rick Husband Airport in Amarillo); private aircraft (Shamrock Municipal Airport features a lighted 3,500’ runway); or vehicle, because Shamrock is conveniently located at the crossroads of America (I-40 and U.S. Hwy. 83).

WHEELER COUNTY

•   Whitetail Deer season for archers is October 1 thru November 4.

•   General Deer season is November 5 thru January 1, 2012, with a special late general season of January 2 thru 15, 2012 (anterless and spike deer only). Bag limit is 5 deer, no more than 1 buck, all seasons combined.
o Special youth only season: early open season: October 29-30, 2011; late open season: January 2-15, 2012. Bag limits, provision for the take of antlerless deer, and special requirements of the county, shall be as specified for the first 2 days of the general open season. Licensed hunters 16 years of age or younger may hunt deer by any lawful means during this season.

•   Quail season opens October 29, 2011 thru February 26, 2012. Daily bag limit is 15. Possession limit is 45.

•  Turkey season opens November 5, 2011 thru January 1, 2012 (either sex). The annual bag limit for turkey, in the aggregate for all counties, is four (4), no more than one of which may be an Eastern turkey.
o Archery only is October 1 thru  November 4, 2011. Special youth-only (general) fall turkey season is October 29-30, 2011, and January 21-22, 2012.
o Only licensed hunters 16 years of age or younger may hunt turkey during this season. Bag limit as specified by the general fall turkey season.

•   Spring Rio Grande turkey open season is March 31 thru May 13, 2012 (any bearded bird).
o Special Youth-Only (Rio Grande turkey) open season is Mar. 24-25 and May 19-20, 2012.

•   Dove season is September 1 thru October 23, 2011, and December 23, 2011 thru January 8, 2012.
